SUMMER PROGRAM: Body Image and Self Esteem Group

Adolescence is a time of significant change and self-discovery.

Many teens struggle with body image and self-esteem issues, which can impact their overall well-being. Here are some common issues that are particularly relevant:

1. Media and Social Media Influence

  • Unrealistic Standards: Constant exposure to idealized images on social media, TV, and magazines can lead to unrealistic body standards.

  • Comparison: Comparing oneself to others, especially influencers and celebrities, can result in feelings of inadequacy and low self-worth.

2. Peer Pressure and Bullying

  • Body Shaming: Negative comments from peers about appearance can severely impact a teen's self-esteem.

  • Social Acceptance: The pressure to fit in and be accepted by peers can drive teens to alter their appearance or engage in unhealthy behaviors.

3. Physical Changes and Puberty

  • Body Changes: The natural changes that occur during puberty can lead to self-consciousness and discomfort with one's body.

  • Acne and Skin Issues: Common skin problems during adolescence can affect self-confidence.

4. Mental Health Challenges

  • Anxiety and Depression: Low self-esteem can contribute to or exacerbate feelings of anxiety and depression.

  • Eating Disorders: Negative body image can lead to disordered eating behaviors, such as anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating.

5. Family Dynamics

  • Parental Influence: Parents' attitudes towards body image and self-esteem can significantly affect their children's perceptions of themselves.

  • Home Environment: A lack of support or understanding at home can make it more difficult for teens to cope with their struggles.

6. Academic and Extracurricular Pressures

  • Performance Pressure: The stress of maintaining high academic and extracurricular performance can take a toll on self-esteem.

  • Perfectionism: The desire to be perfect in all aspects of life can lead to chronic dissatisfaction with oneself.

7. Identity and Self-Expression

  • Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation: Teens exploring their gender identity or sexual orientation may face additional challenges with body image and self-esteem.

  • Cultural and Ethnic Identity: Navigating cultural or ethnic expectations can impact how teens view themselves and their bodies.
